I had the same exact experienced. The story told to me was identical to the story told above: I was locked out of my system, a loud buzzing sound was heard, a number popped up to call for help.
I was told I was at risk of my personal info being violated, told how much Best Buy would charge me to repair it, and was give a quote of $250.00 less for them to repair it remotely. I felt for the *** because I needed by system right away. I am handicapped and my connection to the outside world is on my computer in bed. I too believe that this lock out is the scam to frighten people to react to protect their system when in deed we are opening out system up to the crooks.
They also tried to cell me a real time protection software for $500.00. I have contacted my credit card to dispute this charge, but still waiting to get my refund.
